Windows Vista Compatibility

Running TRSim-original, TDRSim, and BarrelSim on the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system may generate a runtime error. To avoid this error, rather than double-clicking on the icon to run the game, right-click on the icon and select "Run as Administrator".

If you are running TDRSim on Vista or XP and receive an error about not having the correct CD-ROM in the drive, and you do have the correct CD in the drive, download and install the following patch:

Graphics Problems

If you are experiencing a problem with TRSim2 not coming up after it has been installed, and if you know your video card is sufficient, you most likely need to update your display driver.  To do this, follow the instructions below depending on your operating system.

For XP:

Open the Control Panel

Click on System (in some views you first click Performance and Maintenance)

Click on the Hardware tab

Click on Device Manager

Expand the plus sign by Display adapters

Right-Click on the video driver underneath Display adapters and select Update Driver…

Follow the instructions to allow it to find an updated driver on the web

For Vista:

Open the Control Panel

Click System and Maintenance

Click on System

Click the Device Manager link

Expand the plus sign by Display adapters

Right-Click on the video driver underneath Display adapters and select Update Driver Software…

Follow the instructions to allow it to find an updated driver on the web

If you are experiencing a “can’t open device” error or your game just comes up with a black screen, it is most likely due to an insufficient video card.  To check your video card, do the following:

Click the Start menu

Click Run

In the small window type    dxdiag    and click OK

This will run the Microsoft Direct X Diagnostics tool

On the first page, it will indicate your processor’s name and speed.

Note: TRSim2 requires at least a 1Ghz processor.  TDRSim and BarrelSim require at least a 500 Mhz processor.  TRSim requires at least 200 Mhz.

Click on the Display tab

The upper left portion of that page describes your video graphics card.  The line which indicates “Approx. Total Memory” is especially important.

Note: TRSim2 requires at least a 64Mb video card.  TDRSim requires at least a 32 Mb video card.  It might run on a 16 Mb card but we don’t guarantee it.  BarrelSim requires at least a 16 Mb video card.  TRSim requires at least a 2 Mb video card.

Also run through the tests by clicking the “Test Direct3D” button on that Display page.  If you receive an error during this these tests that it cannot run with DirectX 9 then you need to search for an updated graphics driver.  Go to the website for the manufacturer of your video card device to download an updated driver which is typically free.

Most of the time the black screen is an indication that either your video card does not have enough memory.  Or your video driver is out of date and cannot work with DirectX 9.0c.  If so, the Direct3D test will indicate this.
